Hi Pito and all,

Sounds good. Networking should be cake??

That and loadable device drivers to beat an old horse :).

I wonder who will get chip running first. I assume Microchip already has internal samples?

Gotta get DDR on it though. Or else VMS style virtual memory. Maybe the instruction set supports it? Serge do you know?

Hi Wiz and Pito,
Good news. With this amount of RAM, we can easily do networking and run PCC and LCC compilers. A lot of space in flash for loadable drivers. M14KEc core has TLB - a memory management unit. Memory pages of user virtual address space can be flexibly mapped to physical memory. RAM size is not enough for ucLinux, but it's possible to port 4.4BSD (or NetBSD) to this core.

Hi Serge and Pito,

Fantastic.

I wonder who will be the first to get their hands on real chips?

I tried to login to the Microchip site but they had changed their password system.

They 'gotta' have engineering samples!

Nope, no PIC32MZ engineering samples. Only PIC32MX.

Looks exciting though - I'm watching the lists avidly awaiting release.

I'm still not sure about virtual memory (TLB). It's optional for M14KEc core: the customer has a choice to enable or disable it at instantiation. Need to wait for the official Microchip announcement.

My guess:
1. Eng. samples - May/June 2013
2. Production - Sept/Oct 2013

I'll try to contact Microchip representatives or FAE regarding this.

Will not be implemented at least with first revisions, I guess..

Hi Majenko and all,

Glad to see Majenko made it to slashdot this morning :).

Now about converting Arduino and Chipkit apps to RetroBSD :) :).

Not exactly what we are waiting for, but Microchip released datasheet for PIC32MX330/350/370/430/450/470 families. Compared to 32MX795 and friends this has lower consumption, some remappable pins, I2S interface (sound card for retrobsd anyone?) and faster ADC.

http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/D ... 61185B.pdf

Still waiting for higher-end MCUs.

Hello guys, I just registered myself although been reading around for a long time. The matter with the PIC32MZ port is something that I am also very interested in.
Assuming theoretically that technical information for it and development hardware samples were available, would it be a long time until the port of RetroBSD for it appeared?

From available sources it seems these are the improvements over current pic32mx high-end series:
1. microAptiv kec core @200MHz, DSP, MMU..
2. up to 2MB flash
3. up to 512kB sram (this is what we need most)
4. HS USB with integrated stack
5. 12bit ADC
6. SQI
7. SDIO (?)
8. EBI (external memory interface ?)
9. LCD interface?
10. I2S
11. integrated boot-loader
12. ECC (flash?, sram?)
13. hardware encryption support
and more??
Hopefully pin compatible.. :)

Hi all,
it should quite easy to port RetroBSD to MZ. Assuming all the basic peripherals stay the same.

Do we need a new simulator and compiler?

Hi Pito,
To use DSP and microMIPS instruction sets, we can switch to Sourcery CodeBench Lite toolchain: https://sourcery.mentor.com/GNUToolchain/release2364
Looks like it has all the needed features.

Virtualmips simulator will need to be updated for a new memory map, MMU etc. It does not support DSP and microMIPS, though.

Our friends from China are always much better informed :)

PIC32MZ Datasheet (630 pages):

http://www.microchip.com.cn/community/Library/

PS: 40mA @200MHz - nice..
PS1: EBI (external SRAM) from 100pin up (20bit address, 24 bit with 144pin).
PS2: No SDIO, SPI clk speed max 50MHz (minimum clk period 20ns)
