I did a quick research what is going on with the MZ actually..
(Source: web rumors)

1. ADC - they have returned to the good old 10bit/500Ksmps ADC (even 125Ksmps mentioned in Errata), the 12bit/28Msmps dream vanishes
2. rev A4 shipments on November 24st (estimated shipment)
3. A4 still full of bugs (as of May Errata)
4. A5 rev (samples?) planned to be available in ~Q4 2014
5. MCHP is currently working on a complete silicon redesign (pic32MZxxxA)
6. 12bit ADC (speed unknown yet) planned mid 2015 (pic32MZxxxA)
7. 50MHz SPI speed planned mid 2015 (pic32MZxxxA)
8. FPU inclusion planned mid 2015 (pic32MZxxxA).
Hopefully they will decide to go with 64bit FPU as the 32bit would be a "not the best" move, imho.
:(

PS: no warranties of any kind, info provided as-is..
PS1: a pity we do not have an arm port handy.. :)

Hi Pito,

Thanks review: you've collected quite a lot of information. As far as I know, it will be single-precision FPU. MZ rev A5 at end of the year... OK, It leaves me some time to get ready with 4.4bsd. You know, I have a kernel which already starts (on a simulator) and tries to mount a filesystem:
Code:
Load file: '/local/BSD/pic32sim/demo/wifire/boot.hex', 6916 bytes
Load file: '/local/BSD/Tilden/sys/compile/WIFIRE.pic32/vmunix.hex', 472904 bytes

Almost all distributors indicate end of November 2014 for the chips availability, they will be A5 most probably, for 9.68 - 9.98E + VAT.

Nope, that is a wrong approach, the 4.4 has to be ported now..
:P :P

PS: I've been just kidding, but imagine following: Retrobsd 2.11BSD would be ready (quality as of today) in 2008. Long time before the megatons of $30 ARM(200MHz++) boards with 64MB++ Drams flooded the market..
"Time to Market" is important ..
:)

I attended the Microchip Masters last week. Some developers have received A5 chips and are starting to test with them. One is Digilent, for the chipKIT Wi-FIRE board.

Serge,

That's impressive! Have there been developments since? Do you have code to share yet?

You can find the sources on Github: project Tilden.

Build instructions for the kernel are here: https://github.com/sergev/Tilden/wiki/Build

Since then, I've created a utility capable to create/check/mount disk images in UFS1 format (ufstool). Net step is to compile all the userland stuff (at least libc, shell and /sbin/init) and try to run it.

Don't dream, make it real. :)
But it seems like this document is dated 03/25/14?

Anyway, I have 4.4bsd up and running on revision R4, on latest chipKIT Wi-Fire board.
Since now it's no more a dream, but a real opportunity!

Hi Serge and all,

Serge, I wonder if I can run your latest code on the Microchip MZ board ?

Or put another way, is it time for me to buy an MZ board, download and try to help?

Hi Wiz,

Technically it's possible: all the sources are available on Github. But probably it's a bit too early, as the system is yet very fragile. It starts and can run a few commands, but then freezes due to lack of some memory resources, or crashes. Filesystem check does not work yet. Init is not able to start in multi-user mode. Somewhere in two weeks I would expect to make it more reliable, and then I will create a binary image so you can try to play with it.

Meanwhile, I got some progress: all stats utilities work as expected. See: https://github.com/sergev/Tilden/wiki/U ... statistics
