etc         lib         sbin        u
# halt
halt: not found
# cd sbin
# ls

chown       disktool    halt        mkpasswd    reboot      update
chroot      fastboot    init        mount       shutdown    updatedb
cron        fdisk       mkfs        poweroff    talloc      vipw

Again, something is wrong with your .profile.
Default /.profile contains lines:
Code:
PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/etc:/usr/ucb:/usr/bin:/usr/new
export PATH

This makes /sbin/halt available.

It is the vanilla Autobuild v 354. Or is my sdcard getting corrupt and the .profile has been deleted?
From the download>
Code:
  File: sdcard.img
CRC-32: ca8edef4
   MD4: 963f377cf4cd4274d3316d830ee3aa65
   MD5: 962619c5a69e9f61bcd98a8ee31e32a6
 SHA-1: 8b726344b6893ed77798f570bdb39e2e7ca959df

I've flashed to a new 4GB sandisk, MD5 while flashing 962619c5a69e9f61bcd98a8ee31e32a6
Again, backspace and halt does not work when booted..

Oops... It was a bug in build script, /.profile missing in the resulting image. Please try the next version.

Can I table the motion to move all root's personal files (.profile, etc) into /root (and change the home directory too of course) rather than having them cluttering up /...?

It's one of the first things I do when installing RetroBSD - create /root, move the files in, change the password file, reboot.

Can the build scripts include a check for this .profile file? I went through the same issue sometime ago. Things were building OK for Serge (he still had .profile on the disk from previous builds), but a clean build did not produce it for me.

The issue with ,profile was that it was created only from a top level Makefile, when you call "make all". When you use "make fs", the resulting FS image did not contain .profile. I have fixed this in one of today's commits.
